Rastrow's Island故事非常简单，但里面的情绪非常浓厚，文字也很美。这样的文字也许就是T. C. Boyle的风格。比如，他2003年的新小说Drop City里的头一句话是这样的：
The morning was a fish in a net, glistening and wriggling at the dead black border of her consciousness, but she’d never caught a fish in a net or on a hook either, so she couldn’t really say if or how or why.
他就是这样语不惊人死不休的人。Rastrow's Island，与其说是一个悲伤的故事，还不如说它渲染了一片悲伤的气氛，让人不难窥探到隐藏在这片文字后面的作者的心情。T. C. Boyle曾经这样描述写小说的人，他说："Novelists are by nature disaffected, terminally unhappy, misanthropic, and irremediably bitter over their thwarted desire to conquer all before them. That's why they became novelists in the first place--for revenge."
故事是这样的。他接到Mrs. Rastrow的电话，Mrs. Rastrow要买他在岛上的房子。他卖房子，因为市场不好，妻子重病，女儿上学要钱。但他明白Mrs. Rastrow要的是什么。
在他十二岁的时候，Mrs. Rastrow的一儿一女，在海上淹死了。Mrs. Rastrow的儿子曾是一个提琴手。T. C. Boyle描写到：
“At night, in summer, above the thrum of the insects and the listless roll of the surf, you could hear his instrument tuned to some ancient sorrow and floating out across the water." 这正是这篇小说的色调。
自她的儿女淹死之后，Mrs. Rastrow就呆在她在岛上的房子里，象呆在坟墓里一样。Mrs. Rastrow大概有80岁了。
他去岛上拜访Mrs. Rastrow，开门的是一个穿紧身旗袍的漂亮中国女孩Rose，好象中国餐馆里的女服务生。Mrs. Rastrow开的价钱让他很失望，他内心并不想卖他父亲的房子，房子虽然破旧，他却希望他的孩子能在这里有自己的孩子，因为他曾在岛上渡过了最幸福的夏天。
他在失望之中借酒消愁。这时候Rose来敲门，她给她带来了啤酒和三明治。她告诉他，Mrs. Rastrow虽然很有钱，但她不会多出一个子。Mrs. Rastrow买他的房子，是要毁掉房子，因为房子挡住了她的视线。他问Rose是不是Mrs. Rastrow派她来协商价钱，Rose说不是。那么Rose是来干什么的呢？一个中国女孩陪着一个老妇人，在这个孤岛上，她要的是什么呢？在这个岛上，没有一家中国餐馆，一个漂亮的中国女孩，穿着女服务生的旗袍，为什么呢？他理解到她是为他而来，她要听一听有别于Mrs. Rastrow的嗓音，要一张床，任何一张床，只要不是在Mrs. Rastrow那里，在他消逝之前，她要抓住机会，一卸她的孤单和绝望。
他们接吻，几乎做爱。就在这时候，他突然撑起身来，夺门而出。
